2 paratroopers dropping behind enemy lines at night

Many Transport Planes Took Off From HQ, Each Full Of Elite Commandos. They Were Dropped At Many Different Locations Throughout The Dark Night.

Prophecy: I see a small group of commandos parachuting far behind enemy lines. It is night and very, very dark. Their objective: a heavily fortified enemy installation in the heart of hostile territory. The term given to this installation conjures in the minds of all but these few brave souls—impossible. All traffic in and out of enemy territory passes through their intended target. Millions know of it, but few ever give much thought to its destruction. Its name, “Hell’s Gate”; to some, it is also known as “The Barrier.”

There was an oft-quoted saying back in the barracks, used a little loosely most times: “The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail.” It was thrown around in mess halls and classrooms and sung at off-base gatherings by army reservists, but it was never taken too seriously. Little thought was given as to how those gates would fall; many believed the Commander in Chief would somehow get that job done, and no one ever gave much consideration to the task. Some even gave thought to the possibility that sometime in the distant future those gates would just cease to exist.

One day a plan and sketch-up for a very dangerous mission behind enemy lines was brought before the officers of a battalion of elite commandos. The true objective was somewhat hidden from all assembled officers but one. This mission was so top secret that not even the men chosen to participate would be told until they were almost in sight of the target.

As you’ve been told, the commandos chosen for this mission were picked from an elite warrior band. The plan was executed in secrecy; they would be dropped in ones or twos, but rarely more than that, as there was great fear that they would stand out among the local population and their mission be uncovered. They were dropped at different intervals on a path leading to a specific rendezvous point.

The first to drop landed far from the intended target. As the troop carrier flew deeper into enemy territory, the paratroopers in turn would drop into the night sky, landing—well, they knew not where. But once on the ground, they had on their person special earpieces that connected them to HQ. The term they were to use, if questioned about HQ, was “behind the veil”; that’s all they were told to tell interrogators. They themselves had only a vague idea of where HQ was located, and even among themselves there were those who found it difficult to believe it was where they had been told.

Many transport planes took off from HQ, each full of elite commandos. They were dropped at many different locations during the dark night. Throughout the mission, none of the commandos were given the exact location of the rendezvous point. The mission was top secret, and for fear of the wrong information falling into enemy hands, each commando was expected to get their personal information directly from HQ.

Initially, the information from HQ came to them sporadically, but in time, as each one drew closer to the rendezvous point, the messages would come in more clearly, as well as more often.

Many commandos were lost on their way to the rendezvous point. There were many dangers behind enemy lines, and even the most prepared found themselves in situations that, to them, seemed impossible to escape from. Sometimes they would find themselves traveling in groups, at times in small bands, but in spite of who they were with, there was always that knowledge that they were somehow alone, with only their training manual—which kept getting trimmed smaller and smaller as the target came closer—and, along with their training manual, their most precious possession —their vital connection (PDF) to HQ via their earpiece.

I cannot list the number of snares, traps, and pitfalls the commandos faced on their way to the target; they were many and varied, and as I said, many were lost simply through all they had to pass through to reach the objective. Because of the length of time and distance traveled, the commandos began to lose touch with HQ and, in so doing, lost track of their identity and purpose for being in enemy territory. In fact, many lost their fear of the enemy and began to assimilate into the world around them. Time the tester, time the trap. Those who forgot their mission stopped moving toward the goal, and now it is impossible to tell them apart from those they came to set free.

There was a band, however, that did make it to the rendezvous point and, once there, were given their final instructions. They were to plant explosive devices along the base of “Hell’s Gate” and also along the walls adjoining the gates themselves. They were also ordered to locate hidden beacons set near the area by commandos from past missions. The commandos from the past would instruct, via their earpieces, those few who reached the gates of hell as to the beacons’ exact location. The beacons were set in the mountains that surrounded Hell’s Gate. The on-ground commandos would be directed as to the exact date that each beacon was to be lit. The work of setting the explosives and their detonators would continue right up to the day before ignition.

The enemy at “Hell’s Gate” are like ants at their nest’s hole, coming and going, ever watchful for an enemy at their gate. The commandos are now fully focused on the mission at hand. They have put away all distractions; their packs are empty but for the explosives they carry—in essence, their duffel bags are empty. They are as Nehemiah’s men at the wall of Jerusalem, except for one difference: they are at the wall to destroy it, not build it. They have one hand setting prayer explosives and the other on their weapon. Nothing must dissuade them. The date of their escape is set (see blog for the 15th) and they must hold to that date as truth, for it is truth; but the enemy’s presence is a constant threat to their holding to their task. Any distraction—anything but the mission at hand—may spell their defeat, yes, even at this, the latest stage of their mission.  (End)
